Fighting Sex Trafficking from California to Costa Rica
Posted on June 06, 2014, by Liriel Higa, Half the Sky Movement
Three summers ago, on a church trip to Costa Rica, Jessica Bird witnessed firsthand the repercussions of sex trafficking when she volunteered at a safe house. There, she befriended a 17-year-old American citizen from Florida who was trafficked by her own father when she was 12, and forced into prostitution as a result. She managed to escape at 16, but with no education, prostitution was the only way she knew to make a living until she discovered the safe house. Read More »

Ending FGM in the United States
Posted on May 29, 2014, by Jaha Dukureh
I am often asked, “Out of all the survivors of female genital mutilation (FGM) in America, why did you start a campaign against the practice?” Every day I live with the fact that something was taken away from me at a very young age. Not understanding what it would have meant or felt like if I had not gone through FGM is something that will forever haunt me. Read More »

The UN Women’s 58th Commission on the Status of Women started March 10, and thanks to the Global Fund for Women, I was able to attend the parallel NGO events held at the same time. Why Are Slum Girls Missing 36 days of School Annually?
Posted on October 07, 2013, by Jane Otai, Jhpiego
Lucy, a 12-year-old girl at one of the many informal schools in Nairobi’s Mathare slum, stays home when she has her monthly period because she is worried she won’t be able to contain the bleeding and will bring shame on herself. Child Marriage in Nigeria: Why It Must End
Posted on September 27, 2013, by Oluwaseun Osowobi, Half the Sky Movement
When I was 10, I attended the wedding of a 13-year-old girl and a much older man in Zamfara State, Nigeria. I don’t remember her name, but her sad look will always be fresh in my mind.
